OpenTIE is an open-source reimplementation of Star Wars: TIE Fighter for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It runs original game data natively on current systems, supporting both the 1995 Collector's CD-ROM and 1998 Windows releases. With both editions installed, OpenTIE combines the 1995 menus, cutscenes, and adaptive iMUSE soundtrack with the 1998 flight simulation and 3D assets. The project does not include original game content; a complete installation of at least one edition is required. Star Wars: TIE Fighter Special Edition is available from GOG and Steam.

OpenTIE reimplements the adaptive iMUSE soundtrack, allowing music to respond to mission events. It emulates Roland SC-55 Sound Canvas hardware (with user-supplied ROMs), offers built-in OPL3 emulation, and supports FluidSynth with custom SoundFonts. Graphics modes include classic preservation and modern rendering with shadows, ambient occlusion, bloom, motion blur, MSAA, and AMD FidelityFX FSR 3.1.4 upscaling. Flight simulation updates up to 240 Hz for smoother controls.

Fans may also explore OpenXWA, a similar reimplementation of Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance. Both projects are under active development. Community discussion occurs on the Totally Open Discord server. Downloads are available via GitHub Releases.
