NYPD officer James Giovansanti, a Staten Island resident, has accumulated 547 speeding tickets since 2022, making him the city’s second-most-reckless driver. His 4,800-pound 2022 RAM 1500 truck has been caught speeding at 41 mph or higher in school zones and near schools, including P. S. 22 and Port Richmond High.

Despite this, he remains on duty, with the NYPD dismissing violations as unrelated to his job. A former NYPD officer turned professor called his behavior ‘indifferent to public safety’ and demanded serious discipline. The case highlights the need for the ‘Stop Super Speeders Act,’ a bill requiring repeat speeders to install speed limiters.

Without such measures, Giovansanti’s truck would have been restricted since 2022. Activists warn his driving poses a severe risk, as 41 mph collisions have a 20% survival rate for pedestrians. The DOT reports drivers with multiple violations are 40 times more likely to cause fatal crashes.

Giovansanti’s record includes 20 red-light violations and 527 total tickets, costing $36,650. Streetsblog identified his truck via license plates and public records, revealing a pattern of reckless driving on Richmond Terrace, a 30-mph road with high pedestrian traffic. His truck’s design, with a large hood and limited visibility, exacerbates risks.

Despite this, no disciplinary action has been taken, sparking calls for policy changes to hold officers accountable.
