A catastrophic flash flood in Nepal's Melamchi River valley has prompted scientists to investigate the complex chain of events that led to the disaster. The flood, which occurred in June 2021, was not caused by a single factor but by a combination of a glacial lake outburst, a landslide dam breach, and intense rainfall. Researchers used satellite imagery and field surveys to reconstruct the sequence, revealing that a massive landslide temporarily blocked the river, creating a lake that later burst, sending a wall of water and debris downstream.

The flood destroyed infrastructure, including roads and hydropower plants, and displaced thousands of people. The findings highlight the growing risk of such events in the Himalayas due to climate change, which is causing glaciers to melt and slopes to destabilize.
