Nasal Spray Reverses Brain Aging

Texas A&M researchers developed a nasal spray that may reverse brain aging by reducing inflammation. Led by Dr. Ashok Shetty, the treatment uses extracellular vesicles loaded with microRNAs to target chronic inflammation. In a study published in the Journal of Extracellular Vesicles, scientists reported the therapy restored memory and brain cell function after just two doses, challenging the notion that brain aging is irreversible.

The nasal delivery method allows the treatment to bypass the brain's protective barrier and directly target immune cells involved in inflammation. The therapy suppresses inflammatory systems like NLRP3 inflammasome and restores mitochondrial function in brain cells. Behavioral testing showed significant improvements in memory and recognition tasks that lasted for months after treatment, suggesting the brain's own repair systems were activated.

With dementia cases expected to rise from 514,000 to 1 million U.S. cases by 2060, this therapy could address a major health concern. The researchers have already filed a U.S. patent and received funding from the National Institute on Aging. Unlike many biomedical studies, the treatment showed consistent results across both sexes, potentially offering a universal approach to brain aging that could eventually replace invasive procedures or long-term medication regimens.
