NASA Extends Voyager 2 Mission with Power-Saving Tweak

NASA has successfully implemented a power-saving maneuver on its Voyager 2 probe, extending the mission of the 48-year-old spacecraft for at least another year. Launched in 1977 alongside its twin Voyager 1, both probes rely on radioisotope thermoelectric generators that lose about four watts of power annually. Engineers recently reduced Voyager 2's power consumption by deactivating non-essential systems and switching to lower-power alternatives, allowing all three remaining science instruments to continue operating.

"The spacecraft power margins have grown razor thin, requiring the team to conserve energy by shutting off non-essential devices and systems," NASA officials stated. Since 2024, each spacecraft has turned off two of their original 10 instruments due to power constraints. Voyager 2 is currently at approximately 142 astronomical units from Earth, while Voyager 1 is nearing 171 AU.

The "Big Bang" power adjustment will soon be applied to Voyager 1 as well. Signals take nearly 24 hours to reach each spacecraft. Both probes continue transmitting valuable data from interstellar space, with Voyager 1 having entered this region in 2012 and Voyager 2 following in 2018.

Initially launched to study the outer planets during a rare planetary alignment, the Voyagers have far exceeded their planned five-year mission, becoming humanity's farthest-traveled spacecraft.
