Most Popular Numbers in Hacker News Titles

Two consecutive front‑page titles contained a 6, but that coincidence is meaningless. A simple ClickHouse query on the public HN dataset shows 2 as the top‑ranked number.

The inflated count comes from a regex that splits every digit sequence: "2.0" becomes 2, "1,000" becomes 1, and even "S3" yields 3. A tighter pattern that preserves commas, decimals, and ignores years reduces the bias. With the filter applied, 1 takes the crown and the phantom 0 disappears.

Small numbers prevail because HN posts love listicles, version releases, and round thresholds. 2, 3, 4, and 5 dominate release announcements (Ghostty 1.0, Rust 1.0, Llama 2, Dall‑E 2, Meta Llama 3, Gemini 3). Listicle titles almost always feature a single‑digit count, and round numbers are chosen for emphasis.

External shocks appear as spikes: 19 (COVID‑19) exploded in 2020, and 4 (GPT‑4) surged in 2023, pushing those digits briefly above the usual hierarchy. The number 6 remains a distant ninth‑place contender with 17,933 appearances.
