MCP Roadmap Update & Priorities

Today we publish an updated roadmap for the Model Context Protocol, covering the next specification release and beyond. Developed by the Core Maintainers alongside our community and Working Groups, this plan sets the direction for protocol work over the coming months.

Priority areas include modern agentic messaging primitives, addressing the need for longer loops, streamed results, and mid-flight steering. The team is maturing Tasks and expanding server-initiated events like webhooks and channels so clients avoid constant polling while ensuring primitives work together effectively.

Transport unification continues with Streamable HTTP over stdio, allowing local and remote servers to operate seamlessly across existing API infrastructure. Security enhancements focus on agent identity through Demonstrating Proof of Possession (DPoP) and Workload Identity Federation, reducing reliance on pasted API keys and long-lived tokens.

Finally, the roadmap addresses improved tool result contracts and progressive discovery to handle growing catalog scales. Ongoing collaboration with the IETF OAuth working groups ensures underlying standards evolve alongside these critical building blocks for enterprise-ready authorization.
