The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers rose 0.5 percent in May 2026, moderating from April's 0.6 percent increase. The index climbed 4.2 percent over the past 12 months, with energy costs accounting for more than sixty percent of the monthly all-items increase. Gasoline prices surged 7.0 percent in May alone.

Energy prices dominated the inflation picture, jumping 3.9 percent after a 3.8 percent rise in April. Gasoline led the charge with a 7.0 percent monthly increase and 40.5 percent annual gain. Food costs edged up 0.2 percent, with food at home rising 0.1 percent and food away from home increasing 0.3 percent. Dairy prices fell 0.6 percent, led by a 2.9 percent drop in cheese.

Excluding food and energy, core inflation rose 0.2 percent in May and 2.9 percent annually. Shelter costs increased 0.3 percent monthly, while medical care climbed 0.3 percent. Some sectors bucked the trend: motor vehicle insurance fell 1.7 percent and new vehicle prices dropped 0.3 percent. The data suggests persistent inflationary pressure concentrated in energy-dependent categories rather than broad-based price increases.

The May figures arrive amid ongoing debates about monetary policy responses to energy-driven inflation. With gasoline up nearly 41 percent year-over-year, transportation and logistics sectors face significant cost pressures that could influence Federal Reserve decisions on interest rate adjustments.
