London, a bustling metropolis, is filled with unique quirks and trivia that even lifelong residents may not know. Despite our fierce local pride, we share more similarities with the rest of the UK than either side would like to admit - including driving on the left. However, there's one exception: Savoy Court. This private road leading up to the famous Strand-based Savoy Hotel and theatre of the same name sees drivers on the right, almost as if we're in America.

The reason? It allows taxis dropping off theatre-goers to avoid blocking the hotel entrance and conveniently pick up guests wishing to travel elsewhere in our magnificent city. An old theory also suggests this arrangement was designed so women, traditionally seated behind the driver in horse-drawn carriages, wouldn't have to walk around the carriage when alighting. It might seem a bit lazy, but then again, they were wealthy and it was a different time.

However, this doesn't mean that the system has always operated without a hitch. Nowadays, you'll notice 'IN' and 'OUT' signs painted on the ground to prevent any mishaps, but this did little to alleviate the traffic congestion back in the 1960s. It became so severe at one stage that a police officer had to be stationed at the Strand to direct traffic and manage the flow.
