LM Studio Bionic: AI Agent for Open Models

Hacker News •

LM Studio has launched LM Studio Bionic, an AI agent designed for real work with open models, including coding, research, and document management. Bionic offers flexibility, allowing users to run models locally or connect to cloud-based open-source models while maintaining privacy and control over AI spending. The platform commits to Zero Data Retention.

Key features include a Bionic agent proficient in coding and document tasks, voice input with local transcription (shipping with Mistral AI's Voxtral), and flexible model execution via local, LM Link, or LM Studio Secure Cloud. For coding, Bionic can inspect codebases, explain code, and assist with changes, integrating with models like GLM 5.2 and Kimi K2.7. It also supports productivity tasks, processing various file types like documents, slides, and spreadsheets in a sandboxed environment.

LM Studio Bionic supports downloading and running local LLMs directly within the app, powered by the LM Studio runtime. For more complex tasks, it leverages frontier open models on the LM Studio Secure Cloud, ensuring requests are processed transiently with no data retention. Bionic is a separate application from the original LM Studio, which can still be used for advanced configuration. Users can create an LM Studio account for cloud model billing.
