JAXA Tests Mach-5 Hypersonic Engine

JAXA has successfully tested a ramjet engine designed for Mach-5 hypersonic aircraft, potentially enabling Tokyo-to-Los Angeles flights in just two hours instead of ten. The ground combustion trial at JAXA's Kakuda Space Center validated heat-shielding and engine performance under extreme conditions, representing a major step toward revolutionizing long-distance air travel.

Unlike conventional jet engines, ramjets have no moving parts and rely on forward motion to compress air for combustion. The test simulated conditions at 25 kilometers altitude where temperatures exceed 1,000°C. Engineers developed an advanced thermal-protection system to maintain normal operating temperatures inside the aircraft, allowing sensors to verify thermal-structure calculations crucial for full-scale passenger vehicles.

While this initial test remains a ground-based validation of a scaled-down model, JAXA plans to mount the experimental vehicle on a sounding rocket for actual Mach-5 flight testing. If successful and regulatory hurdles can be cleared, the goal is commercial hypersonic passenger service by the 2040s.
