Heart Aerospace announced the successful first flight of its X1 demonstrator, the world’s largest battery‑electric aircraft. The 106‑foot plane weighed more than 25,000 pounds at takeoff and was flown from Plattsburgh International Airport in upstate New York. The piloted mission lasted 27 minutes, reaching 1,100 feet AGL, and the all‑electric propulsion delivered over one megawatt of power while using only $5 of electricity.

The flight, conducted under an FAA Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental Category, demonstrated electric flight at a scale relevant to commercial airline operations. It comes amid a surge in global jet fuel prices, which averaged $3.50 per gallon for the week ending August 7, up 63% year over year, underscoring electric propulsion’s potential to lower operating costs.

Heart’s ES‑30, a 30‑seat hybrid‑electric regional airliner, will build on X1’s technology. Backed by $9.4 billion in commitments from United Airlines, Air Canada, and JSX, the ES‑30 is targeted for entry into service in 2031, with projected operating‑cost reductions of over 40% compared with legacy regional aircraft.

The company’s leadership highlighted the broader vision: electrification will enable abundant, affordable, and cleaner air travel closer to home.
