Japan’s bear crisis has pushed the country to the brink of exhausting its robot wolf. First rolled out in 2016, Monster Wolf was designed to frighten boars, deer, and the Asian black and brown bears that increasingly raid farms that increasingly raid farms.

Each unit costs about $4,000 and is hand‑built, packed with solar panels, battery power, and a suite of sensors. Its speakers play over 50 sounds—from human voices to sirens—heard up to half a mile away. Because production is artisanal, Ohta’s president says customers must wait two to three months for delivery soon in the year.

Japan has recorded over 200 injuries and 13 deaths since early 2025, a sharp rise driven by expanding cities and shrinking food sources for bears. Officials logged more than 50,000 sightings and culled 14,600 animals in 2025, the highest count ever, reflecting the escalating clash between wildlife and human activity for farmers in remote areas.

With demand outpacing supply, farmers, golf courses, and rural workers are lining up for the next‑generation Monster Wolf—planned to include wheels for active pursuit and patrol routes. Ohta also hints at a handheld version for hikers and schools. Until production scales, residents are urged to follow the government’s bear‑safety guidelines and stay vigilant today.
