Household Robot Tests Turned Havoc: Homeowner Sues Startup

Sean Donovan, a San Francisco homeowner, filed a lawsuit after a group of guests left his house in disarray. Video from a Ring camera showed large black cases being moved into his home on April 12, then a laptop beside a robot‑like device. By the time guests checked out 11 days later, furniture was scratched and dishes missing.

Donovan claims the occupants were employees of Bot Company, a venture‑backed startup founded by Tesla and Cruise alumni. The firm is valued at $2 billion and has raised hundreds of millions in capital. Donovan seeks $12,383.50 for damages and lost income, arguing the company rented his home under false pretenses for prototype testing.

Multiple Airbnb hosts in the Bay Area report similar damage from the same group, citing scratched cabinets, broken appliances, and missing items. Bot Company’s website describes its robot as a low coffee‑table‑sized platform with an articulated arm that can organize household items. Donovan argues that while the company claims its device will ease short‑term rentals, the testing has left hosts with costly repairs.

The lawsuit highlights a gap in Airbnb’s host protection when third‑party companies use rental properties for unapproved experiments. Donovan’s case forces the platform to reconsider its verification process, while investors watch to see if the bot prototype can survive scrutiny. Until then, homeowners face uncertainty over whether the promised automation will come with legitimate safeguards.
