Health NZ Bans ChatGPT for Clinical Notes Over Security Risks

Health NZ has ordered staff to stop using free AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini to write clinical notes, warning that violations could lead to formal disciplinary action. A memo sent to Mental Health and Addiction Services staff in the Rotorua Lakes district cited data security, privacy, and accountability concerns as reasons for the ban.

Staff are prohibited from using AI tools even if they anonymize patient information or transcribe AI-generated content into handwritten notes. Health NZ's AI policy requires all tools to be registered with the National Artificial Intelligence and Algorithm Expert Advisory Group. The organization is rolling out Heidi, an approved AI scribe tool, in emergency departments as a secure alternative.

The Public Service Association criticized the approach, saying clinical staff are turning to AI tools due to enormous pressure and understaffing. Union leaders argue Health NZ should invest in approved tools and training rather than threatening disciplinary action, especially as the organization has cut digital systems and IT support teams.
