GrapheneOS has released version 13 of its Messages app, a major rewrite using Jetpack Compose and Material 3. Every screen is rebuilt with new conversation controls, large-screen support, and fixes for crashes, notifications, security, and message handling.

The interface adds Material 3 design, a two-pane layout on large screens, a new adaptive icon, and onboarding covering SMS privacy and permissions. Conversations gain pinning, snoozing, unread marking, swipe-to-archive, quick actions, and redesigned multi-select. Message bubbles, grouping, and link handling are rebuilt, with full-screen details, SMS segment counters, MMS subject editing, and blocked-sender banners.

Attachments get a rebuilt media picker, redesigned audio recording, captions, a rewritten photo viewer, and a rewritten vCard viewer. Sharing uses a new picker with search, recents, and multi-select. Settings are rewritten, including a new Privacy section. Security improvements include opt-in YouTube link previews, restricted widget intents, immutable pending intents, and parsing limits. Numerous crash fixes address widgets, SMS inserts, and notifications.
