The UK Government Digital Service (GDS) has replaced Stripe with Dutch provider Adyen as the payment processor for GOV.UK Pay, affecting local authorities, police forces, and armed forces units. The three-year contract worth up to £25.3 million will introduce "pay by bank" services that transfer money directly between accounts using open banking technology.

The contract covers 17% of payments through GOV.UK Pay but more than 70% of its organizations, with GDS migrating around 1,000 services to the new supplier. Most users won't notice any difference in functionality, though the change will help public services avoid credit card fees and payment setup costs.

GOV.UK Pay has processed 137.5 million transactions worth £9.2 billion since its 2016 launch, serving 1,718 services across 608 organizations including local councils and police forces. The payment platform continues to use WorldPay for central government and NHS bodies while expanding options for public sector payments.
