Adyen has won the contract to become the payment services provider for GOV.UK Pay, taking over from Stripe for non-Crown card payments and pay-by-bank services. The Government Digital Service selected the fintech platform through a competitive procurement process to handle transactions across local authorities, armed forces and police services.

The switch affects roughly 1,000 public sector services that have collectively processed over £9 billion through GOV.UK Pay since its 2016 launch. These services operate across more than 600 organisations in central and local government, the NHS, and emergency services. The migration represents one of the largest public sector payment transitions in recent years.

Adyen's unified platform promises faster innovation cycles and enterprise-scale infrastructure compared to the previous fragmented systems. The company cites experience migrating high-volume global businesses as preparation for managing this public sector transition without service disruption. Pay-by-bank capabilities will expand payment options for citizens interacting with government services.

The phased migration, managed directly by GOV.UK Pay, aims to maintain continuity while introducing modern payment infrastructure. This shift signals the UK government's push toward more flexible, scalable payment systems as digital expectations evolve across public services.
