Google to Shut Down Widevine Cloud Service in April 2027

Google will discontinue its Widevine Cloud License Service (CLS) on April 13, 2027, giving content distributors less than two years to migrate their DRM delivery architectures. The service endpoint, which has provided free Widevine DRM licensing through Google's infrastructure, will be retired while Widevine DRM itself continues to operate normally.

Widevine's CLS has served as an entry point for companies seeking DRM without building their own licensing infrastructure, but it lacks the support and features of paid alternatives. Google also offers a Widevine License Server SDK that allows licensees to handle all DRM license generation on their own infrastructure, eliminating reliance on the CLS. Many third-party multi-DRM providers already use this SDK to deliver enhanced services.

Companies using the Widevine CLS directly or through vendors that haven't migrated will need to transition to alternative delivery models. This involves revising DRM architectures, transferring security policies, and testing across device ecosystems. Google plans to disable the getcontentkey API in February 2027, requiring companies to fetch encryption keys before the CLS shutdown. Content distributors should begin preparations now to avoid service interruptions and potential time pressure during migration.
