Google Open-Sources Zero-Knowledge Proof Libraries for EU Digital Identity

Google released its Zero-Knowledge Proof (ZKP) libraries as open source today, following through on a partnership with Sparkasse to support EU age assurance initiatives. The cryptographic tools enable developers to create privacy-preserving applications and digital ID solutions. This addresses urgent needs across both public and private sectors for privacy-enhancing verification methods.

ZKP technology lets users prove facts about themselves without revealing underlying data. For instance, someone can verify they're over 18 to access age-restricted content without disclosing any additional personal information. The approach aligns with growing regulatory demands for data minimization while still providing verifiable authentication.

The European Union's eIDAS Regulation taking effect in 2026 specifically encourages Member States to integrate ZKP into their European Digital Identity Wallet systems. Google's open-source release should accelerate EUDI Wallet development across member nations by providing ready-made cryptographic infrastructure.

Developers can access the codebase now at https://github.com/google/longfellow-zk to build privacy-focused applications, while researchers gain a more efficient ZKP implementation for exploring new cryptographic applications.
