GitButler Raises $17M to Replace Git for AI Era

GitButler has raised $17 million in Series A funding led by a16z to build a next-generation version control system designed for modern software development and AI collaboration. The funding round includes continued support from Fly Ventures and A Capital, bringing total backing to help accelerate development of tools that address Git's limitations in today's AI-driven development landscape.

Founded by GitHub co-founder Scott Chacon, GitButler aims to solve fundamental problems that have emerged as development practices evolve. The company argues that Git, designed 20 years ago for mailing list patches, struggles to handle today's workflows involving multiple developers, agents, and AI tools working simultaneously. Current Git workflows create friction when context gets lost between tools, people, and now AI agents.

GitButler recently released a technical preview of its CLI tool designed for GitHub Flow workflows, featuring stacked branches, multitasking capabilities, and seamless integration with existing Git projects. The company envisions a future where version control becomes truly social, with tools that understand team dynamics, detect merge conflicts early, and maintain context across human and AI interactions. Rather than creating a 'better git,' GitButler is building infrastructure for how software development will work in the AI era.
