First 3D Map Reveals Clitoral Nerve Network

Researchers have created the first detailed 3D map of clitoral nerves, revealing a complex network that extends far beyond previous understanding. Using high-energy X-rays on donated pelvises, scientists at Amsterdam University Medical Center traced five branching nerves through the organ, with the widest measuring 0.7mm across.

The mapping shows that clitoral nerves reach areas including the mons pubis and clitoral hood, contradicting earlier assumptions that the main nerve diminished near the glans. This discovery could transform how surgeons approach pelvic operations and reconstructive procedures. About 22% of women who undergo surgical reconstruction after female genital mutilation currently experience reduced orgasmic function.

This breakthrough comes 28 years after penile nerve mapping was completed in 1998. The work, led by Ju Young Lee, has been published on bioRxiv but not yet peer-reviewed. Beyond improving surgical outcomes, the mapping could inform treatment for vulvar cancer, gender reassignment surgery, and procedures like labiaplasty, which saw 70% growth in popularity from 2015 to 2020.
