Europe's Sovereign Payment Network: 130M Users by 2026

Five major European mobile payment systems—Bizum, Bancomat, MB WAY, Vipps MobilePay, and Wero—have formed a historic alliance to launch a unified, continent-wide transaction network. This infrastructure will bypass traditional U.S.-based card networks, serving 130 million users across thirteen countries with fully domestic payment flows.

A central interoperability hub, managed by a joint entity in 2026, will allow seamless transfers like a French Wero user sending money to a Spanish Bizum account. This technical layer ensures users keep their existing habits while transactions remain entirely within European servers, a direct challenge to Visa and Mastercard's long-standing dominance.

The phased rollout begins with person-to-person transfers in 2026, expanding to online and in-store payments by 2027. This coalition already connects Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Andorra via the EuroPA prototype, which processed six million euros in its first year. The initiative transforms European payment sovereignty from a policy goal into a functional reality, reducing strategic dependency on foreign networks for everyday commerce.
