Euro‑Office Debuts: Open‑Source Office Suite Hits Stable Release

The first stable release of the open‑source web office Euro‑Office lands today, led by Nextcloud and Ionos. Designed to let firms, agencies and teams edit docs, sheets and slides without Microsoft or Google, the suite cleans up legacy code, patches security gaps and plugs into partner ecosystems. Users can now collaborate in a browser‑only environment.

Euro‑Office forks from OnlyOffice, a choice praised for its modern architecture versus LibreOffice or Collabora. The team prioritizes full ODF support and plans mobile and desktop clients next. Integration with Nextcloud Hub 26 Spring and Ionos’ Workspace will arrive late summer, giving users a native office module inside existing cloud stacks.

Beyond the core duo, partners such as XWiki, OpenProject, Soverin, Abilian, BTactic, Open‑Xchange and Office.eu join the effort. Each plans to embed Euro‑Office into its product line, with XWiki targeting a Q4 release and Office.eu launching a Dutch‑based offering. The consortium also hires a dedicated dev team, already filling initial roles.

Technical disputes heated early when OnlyOffice sued over license claims, but the issue settled after adding source and brand notices to Euro‑Office. Developers can now pull the code via Docker or clone the GitHub repo to contribute. With a clear roadmap and partner backing, Euro‑Office positions itself as a viable alternative for browser‑centric document work.
