The European Union has launched GOVSATCOM, a new government satellite communications program. This initiative aims to provide secure and resilient communications for the EU and its member states. The program pools capacity from eight existing geosynchronous satellites. The goal is to ensure sovereign satellite capabilities, controlled and operated within Europe.

GOVSATCOM functions as a system of systems, integrating national and commercial satellite resources. Five member states are currently involved, offering 35 secure service programs. The service catalog, currently available to member states only, will expand by 2027. This expansion is designed to fill gaps and incorporate more commercial solutions, improving coverage and bandwidth.

By 2029, GOVSATCOM is expected to integrate with the IRIS² constellation, comprising 290 satellites. The EU aims for global coverage and expanded commercial capabilities by 2027. The program seeks to guarantee connectivity and security for all EU members. IRIS² Ka-band military frequencies were brought into use last week.

This move by the EU reflects a broader push for digital sovereignty and enhanced defense capabilities. As geopolitical tensions rise, secure communication infrastructure becomes essential. The program's development underscores the EU's commitment to strategic autonomy in space, reducing reliance on external providers for critical services.
