EU Launches $16M Science Refuge for US Researchers Threatened by Trump Policies

Aix Marseille University unveiled a $16 million initiative to recruit U.S. scientists whose work faces restrictions under the Trump administration, with 150 applicants from institutions like Yale and NASA. The program, part of a broader EU effort led by Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva, offers grants up to €4.5 million total, doubling the European Research Council’s usual funding. This move aims to counter U.S. federal cuts to climate science, gender studies, and vaccine research.

The EU is accelerating visa processes and pooling resources across member states to create a “safe space” for researchers. Citing historical parallels to Nazi-era persecution of scholars, Zaharieva emphasized Europe’s duty to protect academic freedom. Cities like Barcelona and Berlin are also luring talent with targeted funds: Catalonia’s €30 million Talent Bridge program and Berlin’s medical research incentives.

Universities such as Sweden’s Karolinska Institute and Belgium’s Vrije Universiteit Brussel have launched similar efforts, focusing on postdocs and interdisciplinary fields. While officials deny actively “poaching” talent, the ERC president Maria Leptin stated the bloc seeks to “help colleagues in distress.” The initiatives prioritize researchers in climate science, immunology, and social sciences—areas targeted by U.S. policy shifts.

This coordinated push reflects Europe’s strategy to reverse decades of brain drain while bolstering its research infrastructure. By leveraging historical figures like Einstein and Lise Meitner, who fled persecution to Europe, the continent frames the effort as both ethical and strategically vital for global innovation.
