The European Commission has adopted new rules to prevent the destruction of unsold apparel, clothing accessories, and footwear under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation. An estimated 4-9% of unsold textiles are destroyed annually in Europe, generating around 5.6 million tons of CO2 emissions. The ban targets large companies starting July 19, 2026, with medium-sized businesses following in 2030.

These measures aim to cut waste and environmental damage while creating a level playing field for companies embracing sustainable business models. The rules require businesses to disclose information about discarded unsold consumer products and introduce a standardized format for reporting from February 2027. Derogations will be permitted only for specific circumstances such as safety concerns or product damage, with national authorities overseeing compliance.

Commissioner Jessika Roswall emphasized that the textile sector is leading the transition to sustainability but still faces challenges with waste. The regulations encourage companies to manage stock more effectively, handle returns, and explore alternatives like resale, remanufacturing, donations, or reuse. This policy shift represents a significant step toward a more circular economy, addressing the wasteful practice that sees €630 million worth of unsold products destroyed annually in France alone.
