East River Source Control has appointed Martin von Zweigbergk, creator of the Jujutsu version control system, as chief technology officer. von Zweigbergk began Jujutsu as a side project in late 2019 and developed it full-time at Google. The project has over 30,000 stars on GitHub and operates under the Apache 2.0 license. Previously, he worked on Fig, the Mercurial client enabling Google engineers a distributed workflow atop Piper, the company's monorepo. He also contributed to Git, used by 96% of developers professionally per the 2022 Stack Overflow survey.

Co-founder and CEO Benjamin Brittain stated that von Zweigbergk's experience solving hard engineering problems for over a decade gives ERSC a wholly different level of technical capability. The company, launched in 2025 and backed by Amplify Partners, is building next-generation version control platforms for humans and machines, addressing exponentially increasing source code management needs driven by AI's reshaping of software development.

ERSC Storage will enter private beta later this month. von Zweigbergk will remain a core maintainer of Jujutsu as an open-source project. He noted that while Jujutsu improves the local version control experience, the remote server remains Git, which hits a scaling ceiling fast. ERSC believes the storage layer must evolve to match the new model, work better supported by a company than an open-source project alone.
