East Germany Balloon Escape of 1979

On September 16, 1979, two East German families escaped to West Germany in a homemade hot air balloon. The escapees—Peter Strelzyk, Günter Wetzel, their wives, and four children—crossed the heavily fortified inner German border at night in a 25-minute flight. Their daring plan required over 18 months of covert preparation, using materials purchased under false pretenses to avoid Stasi detection.

The escape was a direct response to the brutal realities of the East German border fortifications, which included landmines, armed guards, and shoot-to-kill orders. Strelzyk and Wetzel, both factory workers, were inspired by a TV program and began constructing their balloon in 1978. A failed first attempt alerted authorities, but they managed to build a second, more capable craft before being identified.

Their successful flight landed them near Naila, West Germany, marking one of the most audacious and ingenious escapes from the Eastern Bloc. The story demonstrates the extreme lengths people took to flee communist rule. It remains a celebrated example of Cold War ingenuity and the human desire for freedom.
