An explosive drone was discovered hovering near a Ukrainian cargo aircraft at Germany's Leipzig/Halle airport, a major hub for NATO and German military shipments and home to Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines. The incident has led to accusations from German lawmaker Roderich Kiesewetter, who described it as an “attempted act of terrorism” and pointed to Russia.

A pro-Kremlin propagandist, Alexander Sosnowski, seemingly confirmed the suspected Russian origin by expressing disappointment over the failed attack in a Telegram video. This event is part of a pattern of numerous drone sightings over European airports and military sites since 2024, particularly in Northern and Eastern Europe, intensifying due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Despite the growing threat, a promised European Drone Defence Initiative has not yet materialized. Individual nations like Poland are developing their own counter-drone systems. Germany has significantly supported Ukraine, providing approximately $118 billion and training over 24,000 soldiers, alongside joint military drone production initiatives.
