DOL's Free AI Course Reviewed: What Works and What's Missing

The Department of Labor, in partnership with private company Arist, launched a free seven-day text-message course called "Make America AI-Ready" as part of the Trump administration's push to prepare American workers for an AI-driven economy. The 10-minute-per-day program serves as an "AI 101" aimed at achieving broad AI literacy across the population.

Princeton's Center for Information Technology Policy evaluated the course and found several strengths. The SMS-based delivery maximizes accessibility without requiring apps or accounts. It emphasizes verifying AI outputs and centers human responsibility—workers remain accountable for AI-generated work. The course honestly addresses AI limitations, including hallucinations and training data cutoffs.

However, the course has notable gaps. Privacy guidance contradicts itself—while warning users never to share sensitive data, earlier lessons ask them to input resumes, medical symptoms, and addresses. The quiz format relies on obvious right-wrong answers that oversimplify complex issues. Given the DOL's mission to protect workers, the course surprisingly lacks content on AI's impact on employment, surveillance, and worker rights.
