The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has launched the Genesis Open Models Initiative with industry partner Arcee AI, unveiling Genesis-Science-1 as its first open-weight foundation model for scientific research. The initiative, part of the broader Genesis Mission launched by executive order in November 2025, aims to accelerate scientific discovery by providing transparent, extensible AI models adaptable across domains like materials discovery, energy systems, and high-energy physics.

DOE Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil directs the Genesis Mission, which seeks to double American science productivity within a decade. The program connects DOE's 17 national laboratories, leadership-class computing facilities, and scientific data resources with academia and industry partners. Arcee AI, a U.S. open-model lab, develops the Trinity family ranging from compact models to Trinity Large, a 400-billion-parameter sparse mixture-of-experts model.

A DOE-hosted contribution portal opened at genesisopenmodels.anl.gov with first-round applications due August 14, 2026. Two contribution tracks are available: Foundation-stage data (scientific text, code, documentation for pretraining) due August 14 with delivery by August 28, 2026; and Post-training data (fine-tuning examples, workflow environments, evaluations) due August 25 with delivery by September 14, 2026. Selected contributors receive early evaluation access and credit in technical reports.
