Ceramic Cookie Jars Make Comeback as Art and Storage

Ceramic cookie jars are experiencing a renaissance as both art objects and nostalgic collectibles. Hazy Mae, a New York City artist, has become a prominent maker in this revival, creating whimsical ceramic jars featuring celebrities like Elvis and Tina Turner that retail for around $800. Her work reflects a broader trend of renewed interest in these once-ubiquitous kitchen items.

Cookie jars first gained popularity in American homes during the 1950s, becoming a staple through the 1990s before fading from mainstream use. The revival is being driven by several factors: ongoing enthusiasm for pottery and sculpture, collaborations between brands like Supreme and Pillsbury, and a renewed appreciation for vintage designs. Williams-Sonoma has even created a Mickey Mouse cookie jar cool enough for Rihanna's kitchen.

Despite their name, most collectors don't actually store cookies in these jars. Pastry chef Cheryl Day notes they're only suitable for short-term storage of homemade cookies, while others use them for office supplies or dog treats. The appeal lies in their ability to reflect personality and serve as conversation pieces. As veteran collector Mercedes DiRenzo Bolduc puts it, 'Each kitchen should have a cookie jar to reflect the person's personality. It makes them happy.'
