Campus: A 2D Workspace for Developers

The increasing prevalence of agentic coding has led to a surge in parallel work, causing developers to spend more time context switching and less time focused on single tasks. This has made software engineering more tiring despite doing less "actual" work.

To combat this, a prototype for a 2D canvas workspace called "Campus" was developed. Initially envisioned as a way to put "work" into better context, experiments with agents in Minecraft and a 3D Three.js prototype paved the way for a 2D Flutter-based version.

Campus is a collaborative infinite canvas where developers can place actual running applications, terminals, and other work-related assets side-by-side, rather than relying on tabs. This spatial arrangement aims to reduce context switching by keeping related items in close proximity, fostering a more holistic and less tiring work environment. The platform is free and available for macOS, with plans for an extensive plugin system.
