Build Scanwheel Mechanical TV with Raspberry Pi Pico

Scanwheel is a drum style mechanical television you can build yourself. It features five windows side by side, each taking advantage of the same scanning drum, but with separate LEDs to allow separate images. The windows are a luxurious 9mm x 8mm each, with 20 scan lines. The software uses the Pico's PIO hardware to drive the LEDs, allowing extremely high horizontal resolution, so the image quality is a lot better than the 20p line count would imply.

Parts include a Symbol Technologies 21-02485 stepper motor, an A4988 based Step Stick, 100uF capacitor, Raspberry Pi Pico (Pico W for wireless streaming), RGB and white LEDs with current-limiting resistors drawing no more than 50mA from GPIO pins. The 3D printed parts (base, drum, lid) should be scaled to 100.33% in X and Y for PLA shrinkage compensation. The drum requires high-quality printing with 100% infill and Arachne wall generator.

Software runs on MicroPython 1.28. The device code (scanwheel.py) drives the display, while host software (videostream.py, pngdirect.py) streams video and converts images to the raw framebuffer format.
