BMW Group is deploying humanoid robots in its Leipzig plant, marking the first use of such technology in European automotive production. The initiative, part of the company's Physical AI strategy, aims to integrate humanoid robotics into car manufacturing and battery production. This follows a successful pilot at the Spartanburg plant in the United States.

Physical AI combines digital artificial intelligence with real machines to enable intelligent systems to operate in production environments. BMW's approach relies on a unified IT and data model that transforms isolated data silos into a consistent platform. This allows AI agents to handle increasingly complex tasks autonomously while continuously learning.

The Leipzig project will use Hexagon Robotics' AEON humanoid robot, starting with testing in April 2026 and moving to full pilot operation by summer 2026. The robot will work in high-voltage battery assembly and component manufacturing, demonstrating the potential for humanoid robots to complement existing automation in demanding or safety-critical tasks.
