Beyond Meat CEO Shifts Focus Beyond Plant-Based Meat After Rebrand

Beyond Meat CEO Ethan Brown has declared, 'It's just not the moment for plant-based meat,' following the company's recent rebrand to Beyond The Plant Protein Company. Brown stated the move aims to reshape the brand around 'very real food that is directly from plants,' distancing it from the current confusion surrounding plant-based proteins. Despite this, Brown maintains belief in the long-term potential of plant-based meat becoming a 'much more dominant choice,' but acknowledges the company must navigate the present 'period of confusion.'

This rebrand coincides with Beyond expanding beyond traditional meat alternatives. The company launched Beyond Ground, a nutrient-dense product made with just four ingredients, explicitly not designed to emulate animal protein. Additionally, Beyond introduced Immerse high-protein sparkling fruit drinks, expanding to four new flavors after strong consumer response. Brown's vision, expressed earlier, is to move beyond the 'center of the plate' and focus on functional protein solutions.

The timing is notable amidst scrutiny of alternative proteins. A 2025 UK government report found no link between plant-based meat and adverse health outcomes, though research indicates many Americans struggle to distinguish healthy from unhealthy processed foods. Brown questions why plant-based burgers, made from ingredients like yellow peas and lentils, are deemed unhealthy, suggesting a need for consumer education. Beyond continues to produce plant-based products but emphasizes its pivot towards functional protein offerings like Beyond Ground and Immerse drinks.
