Apple Blocks DMA Interoperability Despite EU Rules

A new report from the Free Software Foundation Europe reveals that Apple has failed to deliver any interoperability solutions despite 56 formal requests under the Digital Markets Act. The findings show Apple denying access to features like Just-in-Time compilation, NFC protocols, and Bluetooth Low Energy Audio, often contradicting its own technical documentation. Developers face a cumbersome request-based system requiring account fees and lengthy reviews.

Since May 2025, Apple has closed 43 of 56 requests, with 27 closures remaining confidential. Of the 16 publicly disclosed cases, none resulted in new interoperability solutions. Apple rejected 10 requests on technical grounds, dismissed two citing existing solutions, and deemed three out-of-scope. The process can stretch up to 24 months, leaving developers locked out of iOS and iPadOS features despite EU requirements.

The report criticizes Apple's approach as fundamentally at odds with the DMA's intent to create open, competitive mobile ecosystems. While the European Commission has established timelines and a public tracker, developers still fear account termination and face opaque decision-making. The FSFE calls for open standards, transparent procedures, and stronger regulatory enforcement to ensure fair access to Apple's platform features.
