Savannah Police Department terminated four sworn officers and two civilian employees after an internal investigation began on July 27. All six cases are also under independent criminal investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). The staff were placed on administrative leave last week when a proactive audit of<bits> the department’s Flock Safetyeloof> License Plate Reader system revealed searches that appeared unrelated to legitimate law‑enforcement activity.

Investigators found the employees violated policy by running searches on personal acquaintances and family members. One officer was discovered giving an external law‑enforcement agency access to Flock Safety, which was not authorized. The misconduct was detected through the system’s audit logs, which became available in April, and the Flock Safety Audit Assist program. The department reports it has safeguards such as mandatory training, role‑based access controls and supervisory oversight.

Following the findings, the Savannah Police Department instituted recurring weekly audits conducted by the Office of Professional Standards to ensure compliance and catch irregular activity. The internal investigation is now closed and the six employees have been terminated, but the GBI’s criminal investigation remains open. The department will cooperate fully and will release further information when legally permissible.
