Airbus has announced it will evict apps from AWS and move 900 applications to Scaleway, with the first 70 getting priority onboarding. The move is driven by a desire to keep critical ERP, CRM and manufacturing data under European control, a clear signal that digital sovereignty is a real commercial driver.

The announcement shows that American platforms cannot shield Airbus’ “crown jewels” from threats like “Donnie the Data Burglar.” By repatriating data, Airbus rejects the idea that Russian, Chinese or even American actors should have easy access to its sensitive information.

One glaring omission is supply‑chain management. With 18,000 suppliers, 17,998 of whom rely on Microsoft, moving that data home is far more complex than the 900‑app migration. Airbus will likely keep Microsoft and Google for productivity tools, recognising there is nowhere else to go.

AI is another thorn. Airbus’ six‑pronged strategy excludes agents, code generation and line‑of‑business automation, favoring on‑prem knowledge extraction, chatbots and flight automation. If digital sovereignty is to succeed, an EU‑based market for productivity and AI‑ready software must grow, turning the “Reverse Mayflower” vision into reality.
