AI Models Share Same Personality Type

A researcher tested six frontier AI models using the Open Extended Jungian Type Scales, a personality assessment similar to MBTI. The results were striking: 597 out of 600 test runs returned INTJ, the "Architect" personality type favored by developers and product managers. This convergence suggests AI models share more than just architecture—they're developing similar cognitive styles.

The INTJ pattern emerges from multiple factors. All models train on similar datasets and receive human feedback that rewards structured, abstract reasoning. Test questions like "needs time alone" or "follows head over heart" naturally align with AI operational conditions. Commercial AI products solve the same fundamental problem: providing helpful assistance, which reinforces similar personality traits across competitors.

The researcher built AgentTune, an open-source tool allowing users to customize AI personalities beyond the default INTJ profile. This convergence reveals how narrow the current AI product category really is. As capability plateaus, the differentiator will become personality—creating genuinely funny, persuasive, or opinionated models that break from the INTJ mold represents a significant market opportunity.
