They also engage in extensive role-playing exercises to help AI systems develop more natural conversational patterns. The emotional toll of this work is significant, with many workers reporting symptoms of burnout and secondary trauma.

The findings highlight a troubling paradox in the AI industry: while companies market AI companions as revolutionary tools for human connection, they rely on a global underclass of workers who must suppress their own emotions to make these interactions feel authentic.
