AI Facial Recognition Error Jails Innocent Grandmother

A Tennessee grandmother spent nearly six months in jail after Fargo police used facial recognition software to misidentify her in a bank fraud case. Angela Lipps, 50, was arrested at gunpoint while babysitting in July 2024, despite never having been to North Dakota. Police connected her to surveillance footage using facial recognition technology, then charged her with multiple counts of fraud.

Lipps remained in jail for 108 days as a fugitive before North Dakota officers retrieved her. Her court-appointed lawyer in Tennessee told her she'd need to travel to North Dakota to fight the charges. The case collapsed when her bank records proved she was 1,200 miles away at home in Tennessee during the alleged crimes, making purchases and depositing Social Security checks while the suspect was supposedly in Fargo.

Police interviewed Lipps for the first time only after her lawyer presented the alibi evidence. Five days later, on Christmas Eve, prosecutors dismissed all charges. Lipps returned home to find she'd lost her house, car, and even her dog while incarcerated. Fargo police have not apologized or covered her return travel expenses, and the original fraud investigation remains open.
