Michael Duffy said winning a trophy takes priority over qualification for Europe after scoring both goals in Derry City's 2-0 FAI Cup semi-final victory over Galway United at Eamonn Deacy Park.
European qualification was off the table after Behemians' loss to Waterford, but Duffy stressed that reaching the final was the only goal, with the FAI Cup final against Waterford set for 8 November. He noted that securing a European spot via the cup would be a bonus, but silverware remains the primary objective.
Reflecting on the turbulent season under interim boss Mark Connolly, Duffy praised the manager's free‑flowing approach, saying it has liberated the team to take risks and play with confidence. He added that the victory has given the town a real buzz and a chance to rebuild positive feeling among supporters.
Since Connolly's appointment in August, Derry City have lifted their form, shrugged off relegation fears and are now just 90 minutes from a seventh cup win, their first since 2022. Duffy emphasized that the players are digging in massively and enjoying the style of football being encouraged.
