Active stars like Calais Campbell (Baltimore Ravens, 19th season), Cameron Jordan (New Orleans Saints, 16th season), and Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills, ninth season) continue chasing their first title. Allen has reached the AFC Championship twice but fell to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs dynasty.

To honor the greatest near-misses, ESPN ranked 10 retired players who played at least half their careers in the Super Bowl era without a ring, using Pro Football Reference approximate values and analyzing stats and intangibles. Leading the list is Dan Marino, Miami Dolphins quarterback (1983-99), whose 1984 season set the gold standard with 5,084 passing yards and a 108.9 rating—records that stood for over 20 years until Tom Brady and Drew Brees surpassed them in 2011. Marino appeared in Super Bowl XIX, where he faced Joe Montana’s prime San Francisco 49ers, losing 38-16 despite both QBs passing for over 300 yards—a first in Super Bowl history.
