Goals from defender Conor Shaughnessy and Marezi earned Portsmouth their first home win of the season as they beat Cardiff 2-0 at Fratton Park.

The south-coast side paid a poignant pre-match tribute to former goalkeeper Alan Knight, who passed away this week aged 65. Knight played 801 games for Pompey and both sets of players observed a minute's silence. The hosts handed debuts to deadline-day signings Tyrese Shade and Jayden Meghoma.

Portsmouth broke the deadlock 14 minutes before half-time when Shaughnessy sent a looping header into the net from Shade's long throw. Marezi doubled Pompey's lead seven minutes after the restart, sweeping home Adrian Segecic's pin-point cross past goalkeeper Nathan Trott. Marezi had a third ruled out for offside.

Cardiff, still waiting for their first Championship win since promotion from League One, lacked a killer edge. Frustrations boiled over late when Krystian Bielik appeared to grab a home fan. Pompey almost added a third through Abu Kamara, denied by the crossbar. Cian Ashford nearly reduced the deficit in the final minute but goalkeeper Daniel Bielika saved.
