Arteta: I sabotaged Arsenal's travel to build resilience

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says he deliberately sabotaged the club's travel plans during pre-season to prepare his players for difficulties on the road. Those sabotages include deliberately making his team late for matches by changing their route or meal times, making the changing room hotter, and reducing the number of massage beds. Arteta revealed he used these tactics so players would not panic when real disruptions occur, such as flight delays or cancellations.

He believes experiencing controlled adversity helps the team adapt and stay focused during actual challenges. Arteta explained that when delays happen, the team can use the time productively—playing together, resting, or bonding—rather than complaining. He emphasized that adapting to uncertainty is crucial, especially when there is no element of surprise on matchday.

Arteta also referenced past tactics, including hiring a pickpocket to steal from players during a meal to teach vigilance, which was featured in an Amazon Prime documentary. These methods aim to build mental resilience and situational awareness ahead of high-pressure games.
