Mac Allister stunner gives Liverpool win amid contract sadness

A day after expressing disappointment over a lack of new contract offer from Liverpool, Alexis Mac Allister responded with the winning goal in a 2-1 Champions League victory against Atlético Madrid at Anfield. Mac Allister fired a ferocious strike from outside the box five minutes after halftime, beating goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

The Argentina international, who joined Liverpool in 2023, said his pregame comments helped him "free myself up a bit" and vowed to give his all until his last day. His contract runs until 2028, so Liverpool face no urgent renewal pressure.

Atlético had taken the lead through Marcos Llorente, who extended his remarkable Anfield goal-scoring run to five goals in three visits, including a famous double in the 2020 knockout exit. Dominik Szoboszlai leveled in the 40th before Mac Allister's winner. Julián Álvarez started for Atlético after a turbulent offseason attempt to force a move to Barcelona.

The win was manager Andoni Iraola's first against Atlético's Diego Simeone in any competition, having lost three and drawn one previously.
