The Washington Spirit have become a destination for African talent in the NWSL, leading the league in African player signings. Melissa Bethi, the 21-year-old Algeria midfielder, scored the winning goal in her first NWSL start, helping Washington come from behind to beat Portland Thorns 2-1. Bethi joined from French side Montpellier after competing at Women's AFCON, where Monique Ngock of Cameroon was named the tournament's best player.

The Spirit's African core includes Rosemonde Kouassi of Ivory Coast, Nigerians Gift Monday and Deborah Abiodun, and Burkina Faso defender Alimata Bélem, bringing the total to seven African internationals. Monday scored in her first start for Washington, netting the only goal in a 1-0 win at Orlando that snapped the Pride's 22-match home unbeaten streak.

Kouassi, the longest-serving African player, has developed into a key attacker since arriving from Fleury in 2024. She won the Golden Boot as the leading scorer in the 2025-26 Concacaf W Champions Cup and had accumulated 10 goals and 12 assists in 50 appearances for the Spirit through July.

Ngock emphasized the organization's supportive approach, telling ESPN, "They tell me, don't put pressure on yourself, just take one thing after the other." This culture of easing transitions has enabled rapid adaptation and consistent production from African imports.
