The New York Islanders have signed defenseman Logan Stanley to a one-year contract, bolstering their blue line days before their season opener.

Stanley, 28, was originally the No. 18 overall pick in 2016 by the Winnipeg Jets. He was traded to the Buffalo Sabres last season at the deadline, where he set career-high marks with seven goals and 26 points. However, he struggled in the playoffs, being scratched for Buffalo's final four games during their Round 2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens.

A left-shot defenseman from Kitchener, Ontario, Stanley has international experience with Team Canada, including participation in the 2016 world junior championships where Canada finished fourth.

The Islanders, who have missed the playoffs in each of the past two seasons, hired Peter De Boer as head coach. They open the regular season Wednesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
